It is not understandable why K-Electric (KE) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) have imposed fixed monthly charges — Rs1,000 and Rs400, respectively — and that, too, without any prior intimation to the consumers. Apart from these entities, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) have also started collecting charges on a monthly basis. Since the consumers pay energy charges and other taxes, these fixed charges appear to be highly unjustified as well as a burden on them. This practice must come to an end immediately.
